Beyond toxic
Alicia Sangiuliano
Project Description:
Bayview Hunters Point has the lowest average income of any zip code in San Francisco. This neighborhood houses mainly low-income African American families that are exposed to pollution, poverty, asthma and has the highest rate of breast cancer for women in the World. Hunters Point has the most polluting power plant in the PG&E system, and an EPA-designated superfund site, a naval shipyard with an abysmal record of disposing of radioactive and other wastes into the ground and bay waters surrounding Hunters Point.
By working with the community I have documented patients who have breast cancer as well as the neighborhood of the Hunters Point community including the navel shipyard.
I have contacted the Bayview Hunters Point – Health and environmental Resource Center and did research to find groups who work with the struggles this neighborhood faces. This issue is important because it shows how big pollutants get away with toxic dumping in poorer communities due to the lack of concern for low income people.
